The Most Common Electrical Emergencies
Every homeowner has to deal with their fair share of electrical emergencies. From blown circuits to power outages, electrical problems can strike anytime. While some electrical emergencies are more severe than others, it's essential to know how to handle them.
With that in mind, here are three of the most common electrical emergencies and how to deal with them.
Blown circuits
One of the most common electrical emergencies is a blown circuit. This usually happens when too many items are plugged into a single circuit, causing it to overload. If a circuit frequently blows, having an electrician inspect the system is a good idea. In the meantime, try plugging fewer devices into that circuit or using a power strip with its built-in circuit breaker.
Power outages
Power outages can arise from severe weather, downed power lines, or even animals chewing on the lines. If the home loses power, check the fuse box or breaker panel to see if it is a blown fuse or a tripped breaker. If that's not the case, wait for the power company to restore service. In the meantime, use battery-powered lanterns or flashlights for light and candles for heat. Just be sure never to leave candles unattended.
Noisy breaker boxes
If the breaker box makes a lot of noise, it could signal that the circuit breaker is going bad. Such a breaker would need replacement as soon as possible.
To do this:
Shut off the power to the breaker box at the main switch.
Once the power is off, remove the breaker box cover and unscrew the old breaker.
Install the new breaker by screwing it in place and then turn the power on at the main switch.
Test the new breaker by flipping it on and off a few times. If it's working correctly, there should be a clicking sound each time the switch flips. If not, one may need to call an electrician.
Electrical fires
Whenever there's an electrical fire, it's essential to act quickly. First, shut off the power to the affected area at the main switch. Then, evacuate everyone from the home and call 911. Do not try to extinguish the fire; only trained professionals should do this. After everyone is safe, and authorities have dealt with the emergency, damage assessment and repair plans can begin.
Lights flickering constantly
If the lights are constantly flickering, it could signify loose wiring. First, shut off the power to the affected area at the main switch to fix this problem. Then, locate the loose wire and tighten it using a screwdriver or pliers. Once the wire is tightened, please turn on the power at the main switch and test the light fixture by turning it on and off a few times. If it's working correctly, there should be no more flickering. If not, call an electrician.
Get professional assistance
Most electrical emergencies should be handled by a trained professional. Electricity is dangerous and complicated, so it's best to leave it to those who know what they're doing. Attempts to DIY fix the problem could worsen or endanger one's life. Therefore, it's best to choose caution and call a professional.
